A View from the Bench: A Judge’s Perspective on Expert Testimony

Join other experts and attorneys to hear Arizona Superior Court Judge George Foster present his perspective of Experts on the Stand. Topics will include:

  • How Expert Opinion Testimony is admitted under the Rules of Evidence
  • Presenting Effective Testimony: How Expert Witnesses can prepare and deliver effective testimony.
  • Judges’, Lawyers’ and Jury’s View of Expert Testimony

 Judge Foster is a 20 year member of the Maricopa County Superior Court as a judge and commissioner and has served on each assignment at least twice.  He has conducted trials in the Criminal Division, Civil Division, Juvenile Division and Family Court Division.  In each he has heard from a myriad of expert witnesses on many topics.  He will present on the history of expert witness testimony, when and why it is relevant and how it can be abused and at times misunderstood. He will discuss witness preparation and witness testimony in a lively and interactive format.

Judge George Foster

Judge George Foster has served as a judge in the Arizona Superior Court in Maricopa County since 2003. Since 2015 he has served in the Criminal Department, but prior service has been in the Family Court, Juvenile, and Civil departments. He has also served as the Chairman of the Maricopa County Superior Court Family Court Division Rules Committee, State Bar of Arizona Civil Practice and Procedures Committee and Professional Conduct Committee, as a member of the Commission on Judicial Conduct, and as the President of the Thurgood Marshall Inn of Court. 

He has been active in our community serving on the Board and First Vice President of the Phoenix Urban League, a member of the City of Phoenix Board of Adjustment and Environmental Quality Commission, an instructor for Project Business teaching free enterprise to middle school students, and an Adjunct Professor of Law at Arizona State University. 

Judge Foster was educated at City University of New York and Boston College School of Law. Prior to becoming a judge, he was employed as a law clerk in Federal District Court in Boston, an attorney for several private firms in Arizona, and a Commissioner in the Arizona Superior Court in Maricopa County.
