Judge Flier is a Neutral working for ADR Services, Inc. in San Francisco (2005 – present) handling Mediations, Arbitrations, and Court Appointed Special Master and Discovery Referee assignments.
Before his retirement from the Bench, he was a Superior Court Judge for the County of Contra Costa from 1985-2005. Judge Flier has settled or conducted trials dealing with the full spectrum of legal issues, both civil and criminal, during his twenty years as a judge. His assignments included Civil Fast Track, General Trials, Family Law, Criminal Calendar, and Appellate Department.
Prior to his elevation to the bench, he was a Deputy District Attorney for Contra Costa County (1973 – 2004). His assignments included Felony and Misdemeanor trials, Felony Expediter, and Felony Filing Deputy for the Richmond Office.
He was also a Hearing Examiner for the California Office of Administrative Hearings, General Services Administration in San Francisco (1972-1973).
Among his various honors, memberships, and professional activities, he has been a member of the California State Bar Committee on Alternative Dispute Resolution, California Judges’ Association, Robert G. McGrath American Inns of Court, ACCTLA (Contra Costa County Trial Judge of the Year), IABA (Judge of the Year), he has been a panelist for numerous State Bar Conventions, local bar associations and law schools in MCLE courses as well as a contributor to legal publications, USAR, Alumni Association - Hastings College of the Law, Board of Governors, UC-Hastings Contra Costa Steering Committee, Alumni Association - University of California, Rotary Club of Pleasant Hill, Boy Scouts of America (Cub Master, Committee Chair, Nominating Committee), Cal Band Bench Bar Association, and California Marching Band Alumni Association Council.
Judge Flier is a native Californian. He attended public schools in Fresno. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1967 and is a graduate of UC Hastings College of the Law. He is admitted to the California Bar, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California and U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit.
He currently lives in Lafayette, California. He and his wife have four children. They currently have six grandchildren and are optimistically hoping for more.
