9:00am: “Use of Expert Witnesses in Criminal Court” by The Honorable Jay Karahan
Description: Harris County Criminal Court No. 8 Judge Jay Karahan will discuss highlights from his lectures and published articles on the use of expert witnesses concerning the reliability of eyewitness testimony in criminal cases. Judge Karahan has presided over 500 jury and court trials and has managed the disposition of over 70,000 cases since his investiture on January 1, 2003.
10:00am: “Easy Lessons: What Can We Learn from Others' Mistakes" by Attorney Jim Smith
Description: In this interactive segment, attorney Jim Smith will discuss some well-known goofs by expert witnesses or lawyers working with experts. Attendees will also share their experiences where experts (for the other side, of course!) or lawyers made mistakes and what they have learned, and what we all can learn, from those experiences.
11:00am: “An Update on Demonstrative Utilization in Testimony” by Bob Cardenas
Description: Bob Cardenas, owner of RGB Solutions, will discuss the expanded use of computer-aided animation at trial, the pros and cons of interactive demonstratives, the state of the art, and the potential of digital sensors for assisting visualization to support testimony. Bob will share an interactive demonstration of a vehicular accident created using an app used for creating video games.
12:00pm: “Deposition Tactics and Tips” by Attorney David Wilson
1:00pm: “Understanding the Importance of Expert Designation” by Attorney David Wilson
Description: Attorney David Wilson, shareholder at Mehaffy Weber, will return to FEWA and present two topics, the first will address many of the do's and do-not's gained from his more than 100 cases as first chair lawyer, and over 60 appellate cases as lead counsel. In addition, David's second presentation will reveal important benefits and pitfalls of the process commonly overlooked by both attorneys and experts.
2:00pm: “Ethics for Experts” presented by Debra B. Norris
Description: Attorney, arbitrator and engineer Debra B. Norris, a frequent speaker on legal issues in the construction industry, will discuss ethical topics relative to an expert's practice as a consultant or testifier. Debra is an adjunct Professor of Construction Law at the University of Houston's Cullen College of Engineering.
3:00pm: Closing Remarks & Dismissal.
